Friday, January 28th, 2005

Pick a color from a color wheel and this app will find pictures that are dominantly that color. Currently the images are constrained to those submitted to the squared circle group.

Streetwise

Thursday, January 27th, 2005

The local search space is starting to generate some real innovation. Amazon just launched a prety stirring new product that connects yellow page data to geocoded street level photographs of businesses to the Google API. Web 2.0 starting to swing at a whole new level. Here’s how John Batelle describes it:

New spin on the news

Thursday, January 27th, 2005

I’ve seen this concept in different forms since 1996 when MIT was trying similar approaches to more interactive “exploration” of the news universe. This is a very elegant and refined iteration. All flash based.

Biomemetics - Blade Runner Style

Wednesday, January 26th, 2005

Robotics has been quietly moving beyond jerky metal machines. Last year at least one company unveiled a stunning robotic head (here’s the full-lipped female). As Steve points out, they can recognize human faces when they appear in their field of vision. When they see a face, they smile.

Well Lawrence Summers, President of Harvard and former Clinton cabinet member, just threw gas on the [...]

Tuesday, January 25th, 2005

I’m sure we’ll be hearing lots more about this aspiring auteur, Eric Steel. He set out to make a documentary tribute to a great monument, the Golden Gate Bridge. He described his goals in his original film permit as “to capture the powerful, spectacular intersection of monument and nature that takes place every day at [...]

the poor guy had hundreds of these birds hovering a foot over his head while he snapped away. What we do in the name of art.
it’s an amazing shot, though. Looks unreal, like cgi.

Flickr Coincidence

Tuesday, January 25th, 2005

People ask me why I’m so fanatical about Flickr. Here’s another example of its connective power:
Flickr Coincidence
Where to start? Well, while on a trip to Tokyo, Flickr user Matt took the picture to the left. It’s a neat “meta” picture of an interesting looking phototgrapher taking a picture of an interesting [...]

RSS readers meet Social Networking

Tuesday, January 25th, 2005

The convergence of web trends continues unabated. Here is a company trying to use social networks to help people prioritize the articles they read through their RSS readers. The article in MIT’s Technology Review wisely points out the problem that any seventh grader would see–people don’t have time to maintain a bunch of separate social [...]
